The ground army is absolutely irrelevant. well, who cares about it? It's one ship, and at that stage in the game, your battleships are better, anyway. Machines do end up a bit worse off in that respect, but they gain the advantage of being immortal instead. Biological instead gives you Erudite, which just gives you 20%. Psionic gives you +10% research output, which you can couple with Intelligent for 20%. The leader/researcher bonuses you get are pretty much in-line with what you can get from the Biological path. you can essentially flip the board by making a deal with the end of cycle. The drawback is the RNG and the fact that pretty much all the shroud pacts are horrible ideas.
